About

For over two decades, Duo Deconet and MIA – Music from Ibero-America has served as a vital cultural bridge, introducing the sophisticated landscape of Hispanic classical and art music to the Asia-Pacific region. Founded by award-winning pianist and cultural promoter Irma Enríquez, whose professional career spans international stages across North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific, a mission drives the initiative to give voice to historically overlooked composers through consistent premieres. MIA is defined by its inclusive work with multidisciplinary artists, coordinating immersive projects that weave music together with the contributions of composer, poets, visual artists, filmmakers, and dancers. By celebrating the profound indigenous, European threads of Ibero-American heritage, MIA continues to enrich Australia’s multicultural identity and artistic diversity.

Our Mission
To serve as the premier cultural bridge for Ibero-American classical and art music in the Asia-Pacific by uncovering overlooked masterpieces and fostering inclusive, multidisciplinary collaborations. We are dedicated to promoting deep artistic dialogue and inspiring a global appreciation for the sophisticated musical legacy of the Hispanic world.

Artistic Vision
Artistic director and founder Irma Enríquez is regarded in Australia as a visionary and trailblazer, having carved out a unique space for Hispanic art music where none previously existed. Her influence is marked by prestigious local and international accolades from social organisations, universities, and governments.

    Influences

A great respect and appreciation for Mexican composers was cultivated, while Irma Enriquez studied piano for several years, with one of the last neo-romantic composers of Mexico Alfonso de Elias, pianist, composer and teacher at the Conservatorium of Mexico.

    Contemporary Interest

Her interest in the contemporary music works was well established during her studies with Aurelio Leon Ptacnik, master in piano and pedagogy who supervised her thesis work, ‘Recordings of unpublished Mexican Contemporary Music’, to obtain the Bachelor in Music – Piano; on her concert, thesis and exam she received an Honourable Mention. From 2001 to 2006, Irma started to include famous repertoire from 20th century Mexican composers in her piano and chamber music performances. In a second phase, 2008 to 2011 she expanded the programs with new music from 21 century composers.

    An Opportunity

Aware of the lack of opportunities to see performances of classical Latin American composers in Australia, she decided to present this music with premieres in every concert. The process of presenting this musical heritage began with performances of pieces by Mexican composers and then included including Latin-American and Spanish works. Duo Deconet have promoted the Latin-American works in Australia.
